Our Adoption Process
To the Moon and Back Rabbit Rescue is a foster-based small animal rescue located in Genesee County. We do not have a main facility as we believe small animals do best in home environments where they receive individualized attention and their personalities can emerge. Visits to meet our adoptables are made by appointment and generally take place in the adoptable animal's foster home or a neutral meeting location. A completed adoption application and phone interview are required prior to setting up a visit.
For all standard adoptions, the process is as follows:
For all standard adoptions, the process is as follows:
- Complete the adoption questionnaire (link below). Upon completion of the questionnaire, you will receive an email with some information and the next steps. An adoption counselor will contact you to set up a phone interview.
- Phone Interview: This is an opportunity for you to get to know us better, and for us to get to know you better, including your previous experience, knowledge of living with and caring for a the animal you're interested in, and preferences to help us help you find the right match for your family. We want to make the adoption successful for you and your family so that we know we have found a forever home for our animal.
- Once approved as an adopter after the phone interview, we will arrange a time to do a "meet and greet" in the animal's foster home or another suitable location. At the meet and greet, you will meet the animal(s) you are interested in.
- If you decide the animal is right for your family during the meet and greet, you'll complete an adoption contract, pay the adoption fee, and take your new companion home to become a member of your family!
ADOPTION POLICIES
- We do not adopt out rabbits or guinea pigs as a child's pet or as classroom pets. They have specific needs and diets that need a responsible adult to be the primary caregiver and need to be cared for as part of the family.
- Adopted animals must be housed indoors in a properly-sized enclosure. Larger is better and we recommend C&C cages or Midwest cages for our guinea pigs. Most pet store cages are much too small. Rabbits should be housed in an ex-pen or free roam in a rabbit-proofed area of the home, no cages please.
- Aquariums are NEVER a suitable enclosure for guinea pigs or rabbits.
- Guinea pigs must not be used for breeding. All rabbits are spayed/neutered prior to adoption.
- For guinea pigs, paper bedding (like Carefresh) Aspen or Fleece blankets need to be used for cages. Pine and cedar bedding are toxic to small animals and must not be used as bedding and or litter.
- Wood stove pellets work great for rabbit litter boxes and are inexpensive. They are available at Tractor Supply and are sold as "Pelletized Litter" in a green bag- about $7 for a 40 lb bag.
- You must provide the proper diet for your adopted animal(s). This means regular meal times, measured pellets, unlimited hay, and appropriate vegetables.
- We use and recommend Oxbow pellets. Muesli type pellets (those with extra colorful bits or seeds) must not be used as they cause many health issues.
- You will provide vet care as needed.
- If at anytime you are not able to provide the proper care and quality of life for your new family member, then you agree to return the animal(s) to To the Moon and Back Rabbit Rescue.
- *Adoption fees will not be refunded.
